NYC's Japanther celebrates the sort of scuzzy, shambolic, industrial-strength rock beloved by such neo-no-wave acts as Wolf Eyes, using youthful energy to overcome the limitations of Radio Shack-quality gear. In four years the band has released an impressive 14 records, including 2005's endearingly abrasive Master of Pigeons, last year's Skuffed Up My Huffy, and the recent Tut Tut Shake Ya Butt. Japanther's sets are often brief -35 minutes, tops- but they pummel and scream for all they're worth. Also playing: underground Railroad to Candyland, Killer Dreamer, The Amazements.

Sitting Room Only
One of the more humbling things that happens at The Smell is sitting against a wall with a clear view of the band. All of a sudden, giant people lumber between you and the stage. To stand or not to stand? Japanther is most definitely worth the effort, this duo from NYC who scream into a telephone, coalesce cassette tracks with drum beats that become a variable of a sing-along and drunken exultations. What’s the difference, right? Their latest album, Tut Tut Shake Your Butt, can only get better with a live performance. Did we mention The Underground Railroad to Candyland will be on hand with Killer Dreamer and All Leather? Stand you heathens and move! (Nathan Solis)
